I use several different rubs and oils in my practice, not all of them in every session. These include free-trade/organic shea butter (unscented), pure emu oil, Uncle Frank Ansell's Aboriginal Bush Rub from Alice Springs, Australia, and my own creation, patterned indirectly on Uncle Frank's Bush Rub, my Appalachian Salve.
The Appalachian Salve is so named because it is made with a wild-cultivated indigenous plant as its medicinal base. To me, a good salve is not a blend of many herbs, necessarily, but a strong presentation of one important one. In the case of this Salve, the base I use is mullein, a wonderful, robust plant that grows plentifully in the Appalachian Mountain Range. Like Uncle Frank's Bush Rub, this salve is literally made with love and song. During the entire production of this special salve, from the cultivation and drying of the leaves and roots, to the immersion in olive oil from this land, to the massaging of the oil out of the saturated plant, to the blending of the oil with beeswax and essential organic oil (for fragrance), love and song are joined to the process--the components of the Salve and the final forms themselves are in every case handled with the greatest care and respect!
Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) has many wonderful healing properties. Known in former times by the name "Witches' Wick," mullein was often considered a ward against evil spirits and dark energies. More conventionally, mullein is noted for its antiflammatory, antitumor, analgesic (pain-relieving), antibacterial, antispasmodic, and antifungal properties as well for its knack for relieving migraines when applied to the temples or taken as an herbal tea. Many people use it to treat respiratory conditions. Some use it for various skin conditions and ailments. It is wonderful for treating arthritic and rheumatic conditions. I use it everyday in my practice; the Appalachian Bush Rub is my go-to muscle rub and massage lubricant!
At present, I have Appalachian Salve in 1 oz. and 4 oz. amber jars, made with homegrown mullein, fragranced with organic cypress oil. I will possibly offer blends with comfrey, and oils such as honeysuckle and lavender, in the future.
My Appalchian Salve is available for purchase at my office, and also at the West Village Market, the French Broad Food Co-Op-- both in Asheville--and All Good Coffee in Weaverville. In-office prices are as follows:
